Education

The foundation believes that education is the key factor in fighting poverty. This is the reason why the Unang Hakbang sa Kinabukasan (UHSK) was launched in 1998. The UHSK project centers its attention to Grade I students and provides them with a complete set of school materials – writing pads, pencils, crayons and a school bag – to properly equip them for schoolwork. Since its launch in 1997, the project has served 70,547 Grade 1 students in Metro Manila, Zamboanga, Lanao del Norte, Cotabato, Quezon, Nueva Ecija, Aurora and Rizal.

In the aftermath of the typhoons that struck some areas of the country in 2004, Unang Hakbang sa Kinabukasan expanded its service to include the rehabilitation and reconstruction of schools that had been heavily damaged or even wiped-out by landslides and floods in Quezon, Aurora and Nueva Ecija. The Foundation rehabilitated, through this project, even war-ravaged schools in Mindanao. This project effectively exemplifies the burning commitment that the Foundation has for the education of the young Filipino, especially those that are marginalized.
